CAT’s spring after-school Bike Club programs at William Penn and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools finished on May 28th, with 15 young bicyclists completing the program. The fourth and fifth grade students made the ride on their final week from their respective schools to the northside Bethlehem Dairy Store “The Cup” for ice cream. Routes chosen were low-traffic neighborhood streets as much as possible.
CAT’s Bike Club involves students to participate 1.5 hours each week for five weeks. The students gain riding skills, safe road riding skills, and some basic bike maintenance skills. At the conclusion of the final ride, students get to take home the helmet and bike they have been using each week. This program is run at two elementary schools each Fall and Spring and has been provided for six years. The program is led by CAT and supported by a number of CAT instructors and volunteers as well as personnel from the schools and community officers on bikes from the Bethlehem Police Department.
