CAT’s upcoming calendar of youth bike events offer new riders a chance to learn and practice balance and bike handling. At the same time, more experienced young people can practice deeper skills of bike handling and simulated traffic decision-making (on a closed bike skills course without motor vehicle traffic). CAT’s Bike Day events, also know as “bike rodeos” or “bike derbies” are most suitable for ages 5-14, but would even benefit many adults for their fundamental, ground-up skills building.
CAT’s Bike Day events also include a helmet check for size and condition, and the opportunity for any child with a questionable helmet to be fitted for a replacement helmet on the spot, and anyone without a helmet to be offered one at no cost.
The mechanics station at CAT’s Bike Day events offers not only a check of vital bike mechanical components, but also a triage repair to make a bike safe again (time and parts permitting). For example, our crew will inflate tires, adjust brakes, and tighten handlebars if they are loose–to name a few of about 15 items we check on every bike.
We hope to see you at our upcoming events this spring. Bring your kids and tell your friends! Upcoming dates are on our Youth Bike Education calendar here.
Youth Bike Events are free to the public thanks to support from PennDOT, Lehigh Valley Transportation Study, City of Bethlehem, and donors like you!
We’ll leave you with a link to our Bike Day in Easton Video.
