There’s an adult population in the Lehigh Valley that needs an affordable way to travel for work, personal needs, and recreation. Some have very limited financial resources and can’t afford a car or the cost of rideshare/uber/lyft on a regular basis. A bicycle provides a solution to meet their transportation needs.
CAT’s Bike2Work Bike-Build program is designed to provide a way for adults to earn a bicycle, by volunteering five hours to help repair bicycles for others at the CAT Bicycle Cooperative. After Bike2Work clients volunteer, they can pick out their own bicycle from those that are available to refurbish.
Next, clients work with other volunteers to make whatever repairs are needed to make their bicycle roadworthy. Once their bicycle’s repairs are completed, it’s theirs to keep. Every client is given a helmet, lock, and lights for their bike. As the final step, clients receive bicycle traffic skills education, with classroom and on-bike instruction, including how to put their bike on LANTA bus racks.
As of September 16th, 64 adult clients have completed the CAT Bike2Work program in 2024.
If you know anyone who may benefit from building their own bicycle for daily transportation, please contact tim.phillips@lvcat.org to schedule an appointment.
***We thank Treatment Trends for sponsoring CAT’s program at “The Center” in Allentown during 2023-2024. This partnership allowed CAT to have an Allentown base for classroom sessions and rides. Special thanks to program coordinator, Brandy Rosania!
