CAT walking bike train rolls 400 bikes to Walnut Street garage!
On Saturday, December 6th over 130 CAT volunteers came out to help CAT move over 400 bikes with human power. The overwhelming community support helped CAT clear a major milestone in moving their their office and CAT Bicycle Cooperative from 1935 W Broad Street to downtown Bethlehem in the new Walnut Street garage. The two-mile walk between CAT’s old and future locations took bike walkers 30-40 minutes to complete. Once they arrived at their new location, bikes were stored, walkers received hot cocoa on the sidewalk and rode LANTA bus back for another trip. The entire bike move took about two hours and easily replaced about 20 truck trips that would have been needed. It is worth noting that the concept of the CAT walking bike train was suggested by Steve Samuelson who remembered when the Bethlehem Library moved all their books two blocks using human power in the 1960’s.
CAT wishes to extend a tremendous thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help today. Remarkably, the makeup of volunteers spanned CAT’s community, including: frequent CAT Bicycle Cooperative Volunteers, Bike2Work clients, Board members, CAT members, and families in the community. The show of support for our mission was amazing!
CAT plans to build-out their new facility at the end of December with a grand opening and open house in the third week of January. Details will be available on LVCAT.org in early January.
