Park Tool School – Basic Bike Maintenance Class

Sign up for the Basic Bike Maintenance class

This 4-hour class is an excellent overview of bicycle maintenance for everyone. Learn about tires, tubes, brakes, gears, and more. You’ll go home with a clean and tuned bike. Course includes:

  • Basic tune-up protocol for most bikes
  • Lubrication your chain, cables and pivots
  • Cleaning your bike
  • General adjustments on brakes and derailleurs/shifting
  • On-ride repairs for road and trail
  • Tires and tubes
  • Replacing brake pads and chain (time permitting)

Tuition Fee: $150

Park Tool School – Advanced Mechanics Class

Note: Prerequisite for the Advanced Class: Completion of Basic Class with instructor approval.

This 16-hour class offers a deep level of mechanical practice if you have already taken the Basic Mechanics Class. It is for the advanced home mechanic or someone looking to build a career with bicycles. Course includes:

  • In-depth tune-up protocol and practice
  • Frame and for dropout alignment
  • Derailleur hanger alignment
  • Wheel truing
  • Chain science
  • Cassettes and freewheels in-depth
  • Bottom bracket service
  • Hub bearing overhauls
  • Headset maintenance
  • Handlebars & stems
  • Carbon fiber component care
  • Disc brakes (upon request)
  • Suspension fork adjustments (upon request)

Tuition Fee: $400

Wheel Building Class

This 8-hour class offers the full experience of wheel building science and technique. Students will learn about

  • Types of rims & spokes
  • Lacing patterns
  • Calculating spoke lengths
  • Spoke tension
  • Wheel dishing
  • Truing stands, tensiometers and other tools
  • Spoke thread preparation

Over the course of the day, every student will build a wheel from start to finish. In a small group setting of no more than four students, this class will be cerebral, hands-on, and fun!

Note: all materials (rim, hub, spokes, tools) will be provided for building a practice wheel during the class. A recommended reading list will be provided by the instructor after sign-up. (Note: wheel not included with the class fee)

Tuition Fee: $200

Learn to Fix a Flat Tire

This one-hour hands-on class offers instruction and practice on tire-changing for anyone!

Included is discussion about:

  • Leading causes of flat tires
  • Identifying tire wear and damage
  • Tubeless vs. tubes
  • Presta vs. schrader valves
  • Taking your wheel on/off your bike
  • Tools for the job.

Beyond the theory and concepts, we want you to be comfortable changing a flat tire in your garage, in your living room, and on the side of the road or trail.

Tuition Fee: $30

Taking Care of Your E-Bike Class

This two-hour class offers a care & maintenance overview for new e-bike owners.

Topics included:

  • Preparing your bike/safety check before a ride
  • Identifying mechanical issues (tire, brakes, drivetrain)
  • Overview of electrical systems and battery care

Class taught by CAT Bicycle Cooperative Staff Mechanics

Duration: Two hours

Ages: 16-adult

Tuition Fee: $75

Trailside Bike Repair Class

Sign up for the Trailside Bike Repair Class

This two-hour class offers riders a chance to learn how to fix their bikes with basic tools and trailside mechanical triage techniques.

Topics:

  • Tools to carry
  • Repairs for common and uncommon problems (brakes not working, shifting not working, broken spoke, loose saddle, bent derailleur hanger).

Class taught by CAT Bicycle Cooperative Staff Mechanics and Ride Leaders

Class Location: Sand Island Park on the grass between the playground and the basketball courts. Group may meet at CAT and ride down together.. instructor will send details.Class taught by CAT Bicycle Cooperative Staff Mechanics
